Layla's Year Reflection

My Year in Grade 5...

My year in Grade 5 was full of many many different things. First, at the beginning of the year, I was doing still above average in math, but I did not know many of the things I know now in math. Now I know how to simplify algebra expressions. In Writing, I wrote an essay at the beginning of the year called Tea Rock Lane, which was a short story. And at the end of the year, I wrote an essay about why animals should not be used for entertainment. I improved in vocabulary and my claims. In Reading, I jumped up 3 reading levels and I learned how to write much deeper post-it notes. In Science, I learned the habits of a good scientist, and at the beginning of the year I did a variable project with Zain using a slingshot, and at the end of the year, I did an experiment with Camilla about cleaning up Oil spills. In Social Studies, we only did one unit, but we did a unit about the Columbian Exchange, and the Aztecs. I learned mostly about how to take notes in a more organized way.

Parent Questions:

1. How do you think your writing has improved?

Answer: I think my writing has improved because I now have a better vocabulary, and I now know the structure of all 6 paragraphs in an argumentative essay.

2. Do you participate actively in class?

Answer: Kind of?

3. Do you work well with your peers?

Answer: Yes. I do work well with my peers, but I prefer

Pieces of Evidence:

1. 'A story or essay that you wrote.'

Answer: Saturday The 14th, Animals Should Not Be Used For Entertainment

2. 'A science project that you made.'

Answer: Slingshot Project

-Reading

Growth: I became better at writing post-it notes because I now talk about the traits of the character

Evidence: I explain what happens in the story much more deeply and I write a long post-it every few chapters and a long write every 1/3 of a book.

Next Steps: I find writing post-its enjoyable very hard and I find writing them every 5 pages hard because mostly nothing that important happens every 5 pages.

-Writing

Growth: I learned better vocabulary in essays.

Evidence: I use better word choice while writing my transitions, and run-on sentences.

Next Steps: I want to improve on writing Narrative stories.

-Math

Growth: I improved a lot in percents.

Evidence: I became a lot better in everything in Math because I now take 7th Grade Math.

Next Steps: I want to become better at geometry.

-Science

Growth: I learned more about how to clean up oil spills.

Evidence: Camilla and I did an experiment with cat fur and cotton to see how much oil the fur and cotton soaked up in an amount of time.

Next Steps: I want to improve on note-taking.

-Social Studies

Growth: I have learned a lot about the Aztecs during our unit and I made an iMovie about it. Also, I learned how to take notes better.

Evidence: In the movie, I talked about the good and bad thing that happened during The Columbian Exchange and I researched a lot about Cortez and his men and what diseases they gave the Aztecs.

Next Steps: I want to improve on reasons when we have debates.

-Citizenship-Core Values

Growth: I have learned to be more compassionate to other people and I have much more integrity than at the beginning of the year.

Evidence: I now think before I speak, and before I tell someone something I always recite what I am going to tell them before I talk to them.

Next Steps: I want to become more responsible by not losing my things and forgetting them.

-Most Challenging

The most challenging thing was that I had in the first week I went to math class and I didn't know that much about what they learned in 7th Grade Math.

-Most Enjoyable

I enjoyed Unity Day a lot because it taught us how to work together well and they taught us teamwork. We played games where we would only win by talking naturally to everyone instead of screaming or talking in a demanding tone.

-Most Proud Of

I was very proud of myself when I got all E's on my math test on percents because I had studied very hard for it. The reason I was extremely proud was that it was a test for 7th grade and I also did the blue level in that assessment.

-Most Growth

I grew the most in Writing because I learned how to write counter-claims. We were doing an essay about an issue in the world, and I wrote about why animals should not be used for entertainment and I found many reasons why they should not be used for entertainment and I found a couple of reasons of why they should.
